July – UV Safety Month

July – UV Safety Month

Here at UK Beauty Club, we want to protect and look after our customers as best we can. As we enter the summer months, what better way to help advise you on Ultraviolet (UV) protection?

The sun can reach the earth in three ways: visible, UV and infrared. There are three kinds of UV rays, Ultraviolet A, B and C. Only UVA and UVB reach the surface of the earth. UVC rays are absorbed by the earth’s atmosphere. It is also important to understand what rays you are protecting yourself from and what the differences are. UVB rays are rays that will create sunburn, cataracts and the risk of skin cancers. UVA rays are known to cause premature ageing, wrinkles, and loss of skin elasticity.

Melanin is the skin’s first defence against the sun and is a UV-absorbing agent. Sunburn is often a result of UV damage that exceeds your natural melanin UV protection. This is where SPF is so important, as it acts as a defence for your skin, protecting against harmful UV rays.

Answering some frequently asked SPF questions:

When should I apply SPF:

It is advised to wear SPF every day. You should apply for SPF 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours or more frequently if swimming, sweating etc. If you have limited sun exposure, SPF15 is suitable if you are in the sun for longer periods of time SPF30 is advised. SPF50 acts as a sun block to the sun.

How does SPF protect me?

SPF protects you from harmful UV rays. These rays can cause premature ageing, wrinkles, age spots, skin cancers and cataracts. It acts as a defence barrier. To be fully protected, you are advised to apply one shot glass worth to your body and one teaspoon worth to your face every two hours, or more frequently if necessary.

Should I apply SPF even when it isn’t sunny?

Yes. Even on cloudy days, it has been found that 80% of UV can still reach the earth’s surface.

We want you to enjoy the sunny weather in the safest way. That is why we have a range of SPF products for you to pick from:

Vitamins

"What most people don’t know is that vitamin D is sensitive to UV-A light, and is destroyed once it has been made active in the skin. So if you want to be healthy you should not stay longer than 20 minutes in the sunlight! Vitamin A is also destroyed by sunlight. Both Vitamin A and D are in fact hormones, which work together to make healthy skin. Vitamin A destruction is a key event in the damage that eventually leads to aged skin." - Dr Des Fernandes (Advanced Nutrition Programme)
